With a little luck, Google will be quick enough to catch on to this. I'm pretty sure that someone is going around stealing activation codes from the Need for Speed website by using textual analysis of stolen pages and then converting those into a .rar archive as an attack vector. If you see the code "80a7f31c-8672-422b-8c3f-ae174910ab1d" anywhere on the internet, please contact ESPN2 immediately. This is not a joke or drill or anything like that, there's a bunch of people who are getting ripped off and I want this to stop ASAP. —Johnathan Stewart, ESPN2 senior director of security. The Korean data-mining company H.I.T. handled the activation and redemption of the "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" promotion and they were surprised and confused as to why they were receiving so many complaints from customers about an incorrect download link for "NFS: MW". After discovering the source of these incorrect download links, H.I.T was able to discover that they were actually referring to "NFS: MW Online" which is a free-to-play open beta version of "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" that has been available to play since November 26, 2013. Since this was discovered by H.I.T. they have been working around-the-clock to fix this issue by disabling the direct download option for the open beta version of "NFS: MW", an official apology will be released shortly by EA. The story was picked up by several sites as a fake, including Kotaku and PC Gamer. Many complaints came from those who had been negatively affected by the fake files, but mostly from those who had been lucky enough to download a working copy of "Most Wanted". Further investigation found that no such promotion existed and that the forums mentioned in the original exposé were not associated with Need for Speed. Around the same time, Dan Houser, the founder of Rockstar Games, made several posts to his personal Twitter account claiming that the Need for Speed website was hacked. Not only this, but his posts also included a link to a now deleted Pastebin post titled "Current Screenshots of Need for Speed Website". This now deleted Pastebin post had over 300 screenshots with titles such as "NFS Store" "Need For Speed Online Store", etc. It is believed by many followers of Houser that he simply posted this link because he was being trolled by the original poster. On January 3, 2014, Warner Bros. placed an emergency embargo on all press releases related to this matter until further notice. EA has issued an official statement apologizing for the errors and will be extending all affected registrants a free copy of "The Run" as a gesture of good will. EA also said that because the promotional codes contained in the fake files were improperly formatted (they were missing a letter and contained multiple letters), those who managed to find the real code would be notified via email with instructions on how to claim their copy of "Most Wanted". In order to preserve any evidence regarding the hack, EA's legal team instructed them to immediately remove all references to this incident from their respective sites, forums and social media accounts.
